Samsung may be preparing a major change for its upcoming Galaxy S27 lineup by considering OLED display panels from Chinese display maker BOE. According to recent reports from Korea, Samsung’s Mobile eXperience (MX) division has already requested development details from BOE and has been testing sample OLED panels for more than a month.
The move suggests Samsung is exploring alternative suppliers to reduce production costs for its next-generation flagship smartphones. Until now, Samsung’s premium Galaxy S series has relied almost entirely on displays produced by Samsung Display.
BOE Reportedly Offering Lower Prices
Industry sources claim BOE is close to meeting Samsung’s quality and technical standards for the Galaxy S27 series. Reports indicate there are currently no major technical barriers preventing BOE from joining Samsung’s supply chain.
One of the biggest reasons behind Samsung’s interest could be pricing. BOE has reportedly offered its OLED panels at around $5 less per unit compared to Samsung Display’s panels. While the difference may seem small, it could help Samsung save millions in component costs when producing devices at a large scale.
Samsung Looking to Cut Manufacturing Costs
Lower component pricing has become increasingly important for smartphone brands as competition in the premium market continues to grow. By working with BOE, Samsung could potentially improve profit margins or maintain competitive pricing for the Galaxy S27 lineup.
However, the possible partnership may also create internal concerns for Samsung’s display business. If Samsung shifts part of its flagship OLED orders to BOE, it could reduce profits for Samsung Display and impact suppliers connected to Samsung’s existing OLED ecosystem.
Galaxy S Series May See a Major Supply Chain Shift
Samsung has already started diversifying display suppliers for some of its mid-range devices. Previous reports suggested the company could use OLED panels from TCL CSOT for the upcoming Galaxy A57, alongside panels from Samsung Display.
Still, the Galaxy S lineup has traditionally remained exclusive to Samsung-made displays. If BOE officially becomes a supplier for the Galaxy S27 series, it would mark one of the biggest supply chain changes in the history of Samsung’s flagship smartphones.
Final Decision Yet to Be Confirmed
Samsung has not officially confirmed whether BOE will supply OLED panels for the Galaxy S27 series. Reports suggest the company is still reviewing BOE’s samples and carefully comparing the potential cost savings with the risks tied to changing its long-standing display supply chain strategy.
