Major Improvement Announced at Android Show I/O Edition 2026
Google has introduced a major update aimed at simplifying the process of switching from iOS to Android. The announcement came during the Android Show I/O Edition 2026 keynote, where the company focused on improving cross-platform data migration for users moving from Apple devices to Android smartphones.
Switching from iPhone to Android Gets a Big Boost
Until now, transferring data from iPhone to Android has been limited, often resulting in the loss of important user information. With the upcoming changes, Google aims to close this gap by making the transition smoother and far more complete for users.
Android 17 Introduces Expanded Data Transfer Support
Starting with Android 17, users will be able to transfer a much wider range of data from iOS devices. This marks one of the biggest upgrades to Android’s migration system in recent years.
What Data Can Be Transferred Now?
The improved system will support transferring accessibility settings, alarms, installed apps (including free apps with user data), calendar events, call history, email accounts, eSIM profiles, and files such as photos and videos. It will also include messages, notes, saved passwords, wallpapers, WhatsApp data, and even home screen layouts.
Limited Rollout at Launch
Despite the wide improvement, the feature will not be available everywhere at launch. Similar to features like Circle to Search, Google will first release it on Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices before expanding it to other Android smartphones.
Launch Timeline and Device Support
The new migration system is expected to debut with Android 17 and Samsung’s One UI 9. This update will likely arrive with upcoming devices such as the Galaxy Z Flip8, Galaxy Z Fold8, and Galaxy Z Fold8 Wide this July.
One UI 9 Beta Suggests Early Access
Samsung has already started its One UI 9.0 beta program. This indicates that users may get early access to the improved Smart Switch experience sooner than expected, before the wider rollout begins across other devices.
