PTA Confirms Expansion of 5G Network
Pakistan has officially expanded its 5G services to 22 cities across the country, according to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). The announcement was made during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications chaired by Syed Amin Ul Haque.
PTA officials informed the committee that 5G services have already been activated in four sectors of Islamabad. They added that speed tests conducted in Sector F-8 recorded internet speeds of nearly 100 Mbps.
Upcoming Spectrum Auction Expected to Improve Internet Speeds
Officials stated that the upcoming 5G spectrum auction will play a major role in improving telecom services nationwide. They explained that the auction is expected to enhance overall internet performance and could increase average 4G speeds to around 40 Mbps.
The PTA believes the additional spectrum will help telecom operators provide more stable and faster connectivity to users across Pakistan.
Lawmakers Raise Concerns Over Poor Service Quality
Despite the expansion of 5G services, committee members voiced concerns regarding the current quality of telecom networks. Committee member Sadiq Memon questioned the government’s strategy for improving mobile and internet services.
He stated that introducing technologies like 5G would have limited benefits if users continue to face poor connectivity and unstable network coverage.
Power Outages Continue to Affect Telecom Networks
PTA officials acknowledged that prolonged electricity load-shedding remains one of the biggest challenges for telecom companies. According to the authority, many operators are struggling to maintain network stability due to power outages lasting more than 10 hours in certain regions.
Officials warned that frequent disruptions in electricity supply continue to impact telecom infrastructure and service quality.
Committee Demands Better Customer Support From Operators
The committee also discussed the declining quality of customer support provided by telecom companies. Members observed that several operators have reduced their helpline capacities instead of improving customer care services.
Chairman Syed Amin Ul Haque urged telecom companies to strengthen their support systems and questioned why stricter action was not being taken against operators providing poor services. He called for penalties and show-cause notices against companies failing to meet service standards.
PTCL Dues and Property Matters Also Reviewed
The meeting further reviewed PTCL-related matters following the recent merger of two telecom companies. Sadiq Memon sought clarification regarding nearly $800 million in alleged government dues connected to PTCL.
Lawmakers also questioned the company’s ongoing property transactions during the session.
Privatization Commission Summoned for Next Meeting
Officials from the Ministry of IT stated that information related to the privatization agreement could only be shared by the Privatization Commission.
Following the discussion, the committee decided to summon officials from both the Ministry of IT and the Privatization Commission to attend the next meeting and provide a detailed briefing on the matter.
