Honor’s New Budget Phone Has Two Screens and a 6000mAh Battery

HONOR has officially introduced the Honor Play 20A to global markets, and its biggest talking point is something rarely seen on a budget smartphone: a secondary display on the rear camera module. The unusual screen doubles as a selfie viewfinder, allowing users to frame shots with the 13MP main camera.

Beyond the gimmick, the phone focuses on practical budget priorities. It packs a large 6.9-inch 90Hz display, a MediaTek Helio G81 chipset, expandable storage and a 6000mAh battery. The interesting question is whether the rear-screen experience will be enough to make the Play 20A stand out once its official market pricing is revealed.

The Rear Display Is the Real Headliner

The Honor Play 20A is not trying to compete with performance-focused smartphones. Instead, HONOR has given the handset a distinctive feature that immediately separates it from conventional entry-level phones.

A small secondary screen sits alongside the rear camera. HONOR calls it a Smart Rear Screen, and it can display information such as call alerts, media controls and clock widgets.

Its more interesting function is photography. The rear display acts as a viewfinder, allowing users to use the 13MP primary camera for selfies instead of relying entirely on the front-facing camera.

That could be particularly useful for users who want better framing or prefer the rear camera’s output. The official specification listings identify a 5MP front camera as well, giving users a conventional selfie option when the rear display is not needed.

6.9-Inch Display With 90Hz Refresh Rate

On the front, the Play 20A features a large 6.9-inch IPS LCD display with a 720 × 1600 HD+ resolution. The panel supports up to a 90Hz refresh rate, which should make scrolling and basic animations feel smoother than a traditional 60Hz screen.

The HD+ resolution is clearly one of the compromises. At this screen size, the approximately 254ppi density is not particularly high, so users looking for sharper text and more detailed visuals may notice the difference compared with higher-resolution phones.

Still, the combination of a large panel and 90Hz refresh rate makes sense for an entry-level device focused on everyday entertainment, browsing and social media.

MediaTek Helio G81 Keeps Expectations in Check

Performance comes from the MediaTek Helio G81, a 12nm entry-level chipset with an octa-core CPU and Mali-G52 MC2 graphics. The configuration is aimed at everyday tasks rather than demanding gaming.

The phone is therefore better suited to messaging, web browsing, YouTube, social media and light applications. Heavy games and intensive multitasking are unlikely to be where this device shines.

HONOR pairs the chipset with 4GB of RAM, while storage options include 64GB and 128GB depending on the market. A dedicated card slot allows storage expansion up to 1TB.

6000mAh Battery Is a Strong Point

Battery life could be one of the Play 20A’s biggest advantages. HONOR has fitted the phone with a 6000mAh battery, which is substantial for an entry-level smartphone. The official figure is 6000mAh typical capacity, with a rated capacity of 5850mAh.

The large battery should comfortably support a full day of regular use, although the oversized 6.9-inch display and rear screen will also consume power.

Charging is more modest. Current specifications list 15W wired charging, so buyers should not expect flagship-style charging speeds when the battery eventually runs low.

13MP Main Camera Keeps Things Simple

Photography is handled by a single 13MP rear camera with LED flash. Rather than filling the camera island with multiple low-resolution sensors, HONOR has concentrated the design around one main camera and the unusual secondary display.

The rear screen changes how that camera can be used. When taking a selfie, users can look at the small display on the back while capturing the image with the primary sensor.

The front camera is listed at 5MP, making the rear-screen setup more than just a visual gimmick. It gives users another way to take self-portraits with the main camera.

The Play 20A also keeps several practical features that budget buyers still value. A fingerprint sensor is integrated into the side-mounted power button for quick unlocking.

Storage flexibility is another advantage. HONOR’s official listing confirms support for expandable storage through a three-card slot, with capacity reaching up to 1TB via an SD card.

The phone is available in Midnight Black, Light Blue and Starry Purple, giving the design a little more personality than its entry-level hardware might suggest.

Honor Play 20A Price and Availability

The biggest missing piece is the official price. HONOR’s global product page currently showcases the device but does not provide a universal launch price or confirmed availability for every market.

For Pakistani buyers, local listings currently show the Honor Play 20A as coming soon, with one Pakistan price tracker giving an expected price around Rs. 34,999. That figure should be treated as an estimate rather than an official HONOR price until the phone officially reaches the local market.

That pricing will matter considerably. The rear display is certainly unusual, but buyers may still prioritize a faster chipset, higher-resolution display, stronger cameras or faster charging if similarly priced alternatives offer those advantages.

Is the Rear Screen Enough to Make It Special?

The Honor Play 20A is an interesting experiment in the budget segment. Instead of chasing benchmark numbers, HONOR has created a feature people can immediately see and understand.

The rear display adds genuine functionality for selfies, notifications and media controls, while the 6000mAh battery gives the phone another practical advantage.

But the Helio G81, HD+ resolution and 15W charging reveal where HONOR has made compromises. Ultimately, the Play 20A’s success will depend heavily on its final price in each market.

If HONOR manages to keep the price aggressive, the rear-screen selfie concept could give the Play 20A a serious advantage in a crowded budget market. But if the price climbs too high, buyers may have plenty of reasons to choose a more conventional smartphone instead.
