Google is expected to officially release Android 17 in June 2026, and Samsung will soon begin rolling out its new One UI 9 software to supported Galaxy devices. However, many older Samsung smartphones and tablets will not be included in the update cycle.
Several Galaxy models have now reached the end of their promised Android upgrade support. For these devices, Android 16 with One UI 8 will serve as the final major operating system update before they move to limited security support.
Most affected phones were released in 2022 or earlier. Popular models such as the Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy A53, Galaxy Z Fold 4, and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are among the devices missing out on Android 17 support.
Why Some Samsung Phones Are Losing Android Support
Samsung follows a fixed software update policy for every Galaxy device. Each smartphone receives a limited number of Android OS upgrades and security patches based on its category and launch year.
Once a device completes its promised updates, it no longer qualifies for future Android versions. Some phones may still continue receiving security updates for a limited period.
Because Android releases are now arriving faster, many Galaxy users are reaching the end of support sooner than expected.
Galaxy S Series Phones Missing Android 17
Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra
Samsung launched the Galaxy S22 lineup in February 2022 with Android 12 onboard. The company promised four major Android upgrades for these devices.
As a result, Android 16 becomes the final major update for the Galaxy S22 family after receiving Android 13, 14, 15, and 16. Samsung is still expected to provide One UI 8.5 and quarterly security updates until around 2027.
Galaxy S21 FE
The Galaxy S21 FE also reaches the end of its software support cycle with Android 16. The smartphone launched with Android 12 and will not receive Android 17 or One UI 9.
Galaxy S21, S21+, and S21 Ultra
Samsung has already ended major Android support for the Galaxy S21 series. These devices received Android 14 with One UI 6.1 as their final large OS update.
Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra
The Galaxy Note 20 lineup officially reached end-of-life status in 2025. Android 13 remains the final software version for both devices.
Foldable Samsung Phones Losing Android 17
Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4
Samsung’s 2022 foldable phones, including the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, also stop at Android 16 due to Samsung’s older four-year update policy.
The company is still expected to release One UI 8.5 before shifting these foldables to quarterly security updates.
Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are also nearing the end of software support. Android 15 with One UI 7 is expected to remain their final Android version.
Galaxy A-Series Phones That Won’t Get Android 17
Galaxy A33, A53, and A73
Samsung’s popular mid-range phones from 2022, including the Galaxy A33 5G, Galaxy A53 5G, and Galaxy A73 5G, will not receive Android 17.
All three devices launched with Android 12 and are limited to four major Android upgrades, ending with Android 16.
Galaxy A24
Although the Galaxy A24 launched in 2023, it still reaches the end of support with Android 16 and will not qualify for Android 17.
Galaxy A23 5G
The Galaxy A23 5G already received its final Android update with Android 15. The device remains eligible only for limited security updates.
Galaxy A23 LTE and Galaxy A13
Samsung has completely ended routine software support for the Galaxy A13 and Galaxy A23 LTE models. Android 14 remains their final operating system version.
Galaxy A14 and Galaxy A14 5G
The Galaxy A14 lineup launched with a shorter two-generation update promise. Because of that, Android 15 serves as the final upgrade for these phones.
Galaxy A52, A52s, A72, and A32
Older mid-range favorites such as the Galaxy A52, Galaxy A52s, Galaxy A72, and Galaxy A32 are no longer eligible for major Android updates. Their software support ended with Android 14.
Galaxy M and F Series Phones Affected
Several Galaxy M and F series smartphones are also expected to miss the Android 17 update. Affected models include:
- Galaxy M33 5G
- Galaxy M34
- Galaxy M54
- Galaxy M14 5G
- Galaxy F54
- Galaxy F14
Depending on their launch date and support tier, these devices stop at either Android 15 or Android 16.
Samsung Tablets Missing Android 17
Samsung tablets are also losing update eligibility for Android 17. Devices affected include:
- Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra
- Galaxy Tab S8+
- Galaxy Tab S7 FE
- Galaxy Tab A9
- Galaxy Tab A8
The Galaxy Tab S8 series is expected to receive Android 16 as its final major update, while older Tab S7 models already stopped at Android 14.
What One UI 8.5 Brings to Older Galaxy Phones
For many of these devices, One UI 8.5 will likely become the final feature-packed software update before support gradually ends.
The update is still based on Android 16 but introduces several improvements, including:
- Faster Quick Share transfers
- AI-powered photo editing tools
- Improved document scanning
- Better Auracast Bluetooth support
- Redesigned Quick Settings panel
- Expanded Bixby AI features
However, these devices will miss Android 17-exclusive features such as advanced multitasking bubbles, system-wide App Lock, improved permissions controls, and Android desktop mode.
After One UI 8.5, most affected Samsung devices will continue receiving quarterly security patches before eventually reaching complete end-of-life support.
