Sharp’s Aquos R11 Takes on Flagships With Leica Cameras, Brighter Display, and Faster Chip

Sharp’s Aquos R11 Takes on Flagships With Leica Cameras, Brighter Display, and Faster Chip

Sharp may not dominate global smartphone headlines, but the new Sharp Aquos R11 proves the Japanese brand is still serious about premium Android devices. The latest flagship arrives with a brand-new 38.5MP telephoto camera, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 processor, and Sharp’s brightest display ever.

Building on the foundation of the Aquos R10, the new model brings several meaningful upgrades. The camera system gets a dedicated zoom lens for the first time in the series, while the chipset moves into a higher performance tier. Although some changes are less exciting—such as the removal of microSD expansion—the overall package positions the Aquos R11 as Sharp’s most advanced smartphone yet.

A Brighter and Smoother OLED Display

Sharp has equipped the Aquos R11 with a 6.5-inch Pro IGZO OLED display featuring a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. The panel supports an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 240Hz, helping balance smooth performance and battery efficiency.

One of the biggest upgrades is brightness. The display can reach an impressive 3,600 nits peak brightness, making it the brightest screen ever used on an Aquos smartphone. According to Sharp, that represents a 20% improvement over the previous generation. The panel also delivers 1,800 nits at 100% APL, ensuring excellent visibility even in bright outdoor conditions.

Premium Durability With Flagship Protection

Sharp continues to focus heavily on durability. Both the front and rear panels are protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2, offering improved resistance against drops and scratches.

The Aquos R11 carries IP68 and IP69 certifications for water and dust resistance. It also meets MIL-STD-810G and MIL-STD-810H durability standards for shock, temperature, and environmental protection. Interestingly, Sharp says users can safely clean the device using alcohol wipes and even hand soap.

Leica-Powered Triple Camera System Gets a Major Upgrade

New 38.5MP Telephoto Camera Steals the Show

The most significant camera upgrade is the addition of a dedicated telephoto sensor. Sharp has introduced a 38.5MP camera paired with a 68mm equivalent lens offering 2.9x optical zoom.

The telephoto unit features an f/2.4 aperture along with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS). This addition gives users far more flexibility when capturing portraits and distant subjects.

Familiar 50.3MP Main and Ultra-Wide Cameras

The primary camera uses a 50.3MP sensor measuring 1/1.55 inches. It is paired with a 23mm f/1.9 lens and benefits from both OIS and EIS for stable image capture.

Alongside it sits a 50.3MP ultra-wide camera featuring a 13mm lens with a 122-degree field of view and an f/2.2 aperture. Sharp also includes a 14-channel spectral sensor designed to improve color accuracy and scene recognition.

High-Resolution Selfie Camera

Selfie enthusiasts are not left behind. The front-facing camera uses another 50.3MP sensor paired with a 23mm equivalent f/2.2 lens. Electronic stabilization is available for smoother photos and video recording.

Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 Brings a Significant Performance Boost

Under the hood, the Aquos R11 replaces the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 found in the Aquos R10 with Qualcomm’s newer Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 platform.

The upgraded chipset delivers higher CPU clock speeds and a stronger GPU, providing noticeable gains in gaming, multitasking, and AI-powered tasks. Sharp has also added a larger vapor chamber cooling system to help maintain sustained performance during heavy workloads.

The phone ships with 12GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB UFS 4.1 storage. However, one feature disappears this year—the microSD card slot is no longer available.

Android 16 and Long-Term Software Support

The Aquos R11 launches with Android 16 right out of the box. Sharp promises three major Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates.

While some competitors now offer longer support periods, this commitment still provides a solid level of long-term software coverage for users planning to keep the device for several years.

Largest Battery Ever on an Aquos Phone

Sharp markets the Aquos R11 as having the biggest battery in the series. Technically, that claim is true, although the increase is modest.

The device packs a 5,100mAh battery, only 100mAh larger than its predecessor. Charging remains limited to 36W wired charging, with a full charge taking approximately 90 minutes. Wireless charging is notably absent.

Modern Connectivity Features Included

Connectivity remains a strong point for the new flagship. The USB-C port supports USB 3.2 Gen 1 speeds and DisplayPort 1.4 output for external display connectivity.

Users also get Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and dual-band GPS support. These features ensure the device stays competitive with other premium Android smartphones in 2026.

The Unique “Aquarium” Light Bar Returns

One of the most distinctive features on the Aquos R11 is the rear “Aquarium” light bar.

Beyond functioning as an LED notification light and fill light, it can create animated ambient effects such as flowing water, rustling leaves, and fireplace visuals. The effects are paired with specially designed audio supervised by sound designer Shinya Kiyokawa, giving the phone a unique personality rarely seen in modern smartphones.

Sharp Aquos R11 Price and Availability

The Sharp Aquos R11 will go on sale in Japan in early July. The device carries a price tag of JPY 163,900, which converts to roughly $1,025.

Buyers can choose between Terracotta, Navy, and Ivory color options. The smartphone will be available through Sharp’s online store, DoCoMo, and SoftBank. As of now, there is no indication of a wider international release.

Final Thoughts

The Sharp Aquos R11 may remain a Japan-focused device, but it delivers several meaningful flagship upgrades. Between the new 38.5MP telephoto camera, Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chipset, brighter OLED display, and unique Aquarium lighting system, Sharp has created one of its most interesting smartphones in years.

Would you consider importing the Aquos R11, or does the lack of a microSD slot make it a deal-breaker?
