Samsung Patent Reveals Possible Rollable Phone With Moving Camera System

Samsung may be preparing to push smartphone design even further beyond foldables. A newly surfaced patent suggests the company is experimenting with a rollable smartphone that features a unique movable camera module that shifts as the display expands.

A New Step Beyond Foldables

The patent, highlighted by WearView, describes a device that can extend its screen vertically or horizontally through a rollable mechanism. Unlike traditional designs, the rear camera system is not fixed in one place. Instead, it moves along with the expanding display to maintain proper alignment and functionality.

Based on leaked sketches and concept renders, the phone appears to include a specially designed rear cutout that allows the camera module to slide or reposition smoothly as the screen changes size.

From Compact Phone to Tablet-Like Experience

When the display is fully rolled in, the device looks similar to a standard flagship smartphone, comparable to the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. However, once extended, it transforms into a much larger, tablet-like form factor, similar in experience to devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series.

This dual identity suggests Samsung is aiming to merge portability with expanded productivity in a single device.

Smart Sensors and Adaptive Hardware

The patent also mentions advanced sensing systems that could detect screen expansion levels and automatically adjust internal components. These include tracking changes in antenna positioning and camera alignment to ensure stable performance regardless of display size.

If implemented, this would allow the phone to dynamically adapt its hardware behavior in real time as it shifts between compact and expanded modes.

Part of Samsung’s Long-Term Exploration

This is not Samsung’s first step into rollable technology. The company previously showcased a rollable OLED prototype in 2023 and filed earlier patents in 2021 covering fold-and-roll hybrid designs. These ongoing developments indicate a consistent interest in next-generation flexible displays.

Concept Still Far From Reality

As with most patent filings, there is no confirmation that this design will ever reach commercial production. However, it highlights Samsung’s continued experimentation in rollable smartphone concepts, joining industry ideas such as the Moto Rizr and concept devices from Tecno like the Phantom Ultimate series.

For now, the rollable phone remains a concept—but it clearly shows where smartphone innovation could be heading next.
