Huawei Just Changed Smartphone Design With the New Pura X View Wide-Screen Phone

Huawei has officially introduced the Huawei Pura X View in China, creating one of the most unusual smartphone designs of 2026. Unlike conventional tall phones, this new device uses a much wider 16:9.5 OLED screen inside a traditional non-folding body.

Huawei calls it the world’s first “wide-screen candybar” smartphone, positioning it as a device built around content consumption rather than simply chasing a taller display. The company says the unusual format provides more horizontal space for videos, reading, gaming and productivity. It also combines that design with a 7,000mAh battery, a 6.68mm-thin body and HarmonyOS 7, making the Pura X View one of Huawei’s most interesting launches yet.

Huawei Pura X View Takes a Completely Different Approach

For years, smartphone makers have gradually moved toward taller displays, with 19.5:9 and 20:9 becoming common on flagship Android phones.

Huawei has decided to move in the opposite direction.

The Pura X View uses a 16:9.5 aspect ratio, creating a noticeably wider body while remaining a conventional slab phone. There is no hinge, folding mechanism or flexible display involved.

The concept is particularly interesting because Huawei previously experimented with wide-screen experiences through its Pura X foldable lineup. The Pura X View takes that idea and removes the folding hardware entirely.

A Display Designed Around Content

Huawei says the phone is “born for content,” and that philosophy is visible in the screen dimensions.

The 6.39-inch OLED panel has a resolution of 2232 × 1320 pixels and provides a display area of approximately 114.27cm². Huawei claims this can provide more usable content area than many conventional 6.9-inch smartphones because of the wider shape.

For 16:9 video, the wider screen can reduce unused space around the content. Huawei is also targeting reading, gaming, office work and vertical browsing with the additional horizontal room.

6,500-Nit OLED Display With Ultra-Thin Bezels

The display specifications are impressive even before considering the unusual shape.

The panel can reach a claimed 6,500 nits peak brightness, while Huawei lists a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. It also supports 2,160Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, a feature designed to help manage brightness at lower illumination levels.

Huawei has also pushed the physical design aggressively.

All four bezels measure just 1.05mm, contributing to a claimed 96.1% screen-to-body ratio. Huawei describes this as the highest screen-to-body ratio for a straight-screen smartphone.

That combination should make the display feel particularly immersive, especially when watching movies or playing games.

Surprisingly Thin Despite a 7,000mAh Battery

Perhaps the biggest hardware surprise is not the screen.

It is the battery.

Huawei has fitted the Pura X View with a massive 7,000mAh battery while keeping the body just 6.68mm thick. The phone weighs around 201 grams, which is relatively restrained considering the battery capacity and wide chassis.

Huawei has not yet disclosed the charging speed, so the battery story is still incomplete.

Still, combining 7,000mAh with a 6.68mm body could give the Pura X View a major advantage for users who spend long periods watching videos, gaming or browsing.

Design: Wide Body With a Distinctive Camera Module

The rear design is just as unconventional as the front.

Huawei uses three-dimensional grating glass with geometric patterns that create changing light and shadow effects as the phone moves.

The rear camera area sits inside a wide, racetrack-shaped module, reinforcing the phone’s horizontal design language.

The Pura X View will be offered in four colors:

The result is a phone that looks immediately different from the typical tall flagship.

12GB RAM and Up to 1TB Storage

Huawei is keeping memory options relatively straightforward.

Every configuration comes with 12GB of RAM, while buyers can choose between 256GB, 512GB and 1TB of internal storage.

That means even the entry-level configuration gets flagship-class memory capacity, while the 1TB model targets users who store large video libraries, photos, games and documents directly on their phones.

There is no memory-card slot listed for the device.

HarmonyOS 7 Makes Its Debut

The Pura X View is particularly important for Huawei’s software ecosystem because it is set to launch with HarmonyOS 7.

Huawei has developed software experiences specifically around the wide display. The company is targeting four major usage scenarios: video viewing, reading, gaming and productivity.

The wider canvas could also allow applications to display more information horizontally without increasing the phone’s vertical height.

That could make the Pura X View especially interesting for multitasking and content-heavy applications.

Kirin 9030S Chipset Is Still Unconfirmed

One major specification remains officially undisclosed: the processor.

Reports and leaks have pointed toward Huawei’s Kirin 9030S, with an alleged configuration consisting of one high-performance Taishan v124 core, three mid-performance cores and four efficiency cores, alongside a Maleoon-series GPU.

However, Huawei has not officially confirmed the chipset specification at this stage.

That distinction matters. The Kirin 9030S should therefore be treated as a rumored specification, rather than a confirmed feature, until Huawei publishes the complete hardware details.

Camera Details Remain Under Wraps

Huawei has also not released the complete camera specifications.

Images of the Pura X View show a prominent rear camera system, while reports have suggested a triple-camera arrangement.

Earlier leaks claimed that the phone could feature a 50MP main camera system with a periscope telephoto lens. Those details remain unofficial, however, so buyers should wait for Huawei’s final specification sheet before treating them as confirmed.

The camera system could become one of the phone’s biggest selling points if Huawei brings its flagship Pura-series imaging technology to this unusual form factor.

Huawei opened reservations for the Pura X View in China on August 20, 2026.

The phone is offered in three configurations:

That could make movies, documents, games and landscape applications feel more spacious. On the other hand, users accustomed to tall smartphones may need time to adapt to the wider body.
