Google has announced a major upgrade for budget smartphones by introducing its AI assistant to low-end devices running Android (Go Edition). The company is rolling out a new version called Gemini Go, designed specifically for phones with limited hardware resources.
Android Go is built for entry-level devices with low storage, low RAM, and modest processing power. From Android 13 Go Edition onward, devices are required to have at least 2GB of RAM, meaning a large number of existing smartphones now qualify for the new AI experience.
Gemini Go replaces Google Assistant Go
With this update, Google is replacing Google Assistant Go with Gemini Go. The new assistant is described as a streamlined version of its advanced AI system, optimized to run smoothly on lower-end devices while still offering helpful smart features.
Gemini Go is delivered through the Google Search app and is designed to keep performance light while still enabling users to stay productive and connected.
How users can access Gemini Go
Users can launch Gemini Go in multiple simple ways. On supported devices, it can be activated by holding the home button or pressing and holding the power button. Once enabled, it opens a chat-based assistant experience similar to full Gemini on higher-end phones.
Features designed for everyday use
Despite being lightweight, Gemini Go still offers a wide range of functions. It can make calls, send text messages, check travel time, find nearby restaurants and EV charging stations, set alarms, create calendar events, and play media.
It also supports file input, allowing users to upload documents, photos, and other files to get more context-aware responses.
The assistant is powered by Gemini technology, but optimized to run efficiently on devices with limited resources.
Gradual global rollout
Google says Gemini Go is rolling out gradually across supported regions. However, the company is known for slow phased releases, so eligible users may need to wait several weeks before the feature appears on their devices.
This move expands advanced AI capabilities to more affordable smartphones, making modern AI assistance accessible to a much wider audience.
