Xiaomi 17T vs Xiaomi 17T Pro: Is the Extra €150 Worth It?

Xiaomi 17T vs Xiaomi 17T Pro: Is the Extra €150 Worth It?

The new Xiaomi 17T series has officially arrived, bringing the familiar question buyers face every year: should you save money with the standard Xiaomi 17T, or spend extra for the more powerful Xiaomi 17T Pro?

With a launch price difference of around €150, the decision is not as straightforward as it may seem. While the Pro model offers several premium upgrades, the standard 17T has closed the gap significantly, making it a strong contender for users seeking flagship-like features at a lower price.

Design and Display

Unlike the previous generation, the Xiaomi 17T and 17T Pro no longer share the same dimensions. The standard 17T features a slightly smaller display, resulting in a more compact and lightweight design. This makes it easier to handle and potentially more appealing to users who prefer smaller smartphones.

Both devices maintain a premium build with IP68 water and dust resistance, Gorilla Glass 7i protection on both sides, and an aluminum frame. Xiaomi has also kept the same color options across both models.

When it comes to display quality, the differences are minimal. Both phones offer bright panels with 12-bit color support, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+ compatibility. The only notable distinction is refresh rate: the 17T supports up to 120Hz, while the Pro reaches 144Hz. In real-world use, however, the higher refresh rate rarely makes a noticeable difference.

Battery Life and Charging

One of the biggest advantages of the Xiaomi 17T Pro is battery endurance. Equipped with a larger 7,000mAh battery, it consistently outperforms the standard 17T’s 6,500mAh cell in everyday usage and endurance testing.

Charging speeds also favor the Pro model. The 17T Pro supports 100W wired charging, significantly faster than the 67W charging available on the standard version. Additionally, the Pro includes 50W wireless charging support, a feature absent from the regular 17T.

Audio Experience

Surprisingly, the standard Xiaomi 17T takes the lead in audio quality. Its stereo speakers deliver louder sound with more pronounced midrange frequencies, making vocals and multimedia content feel more engaging. While bass performance remains limited on both devices, the 17T provides the more enjoyable listening experience overall.

Performance

Under the hood, the two phones target different performance levels.

The Xiaomi 17T Pro is powered by MediaTek’s flagship Dimensity 9500 processor, while the standard 17T relies on the Dimensity 8500 chipset.

Performance benchmarks reveal a significant gap. The Pro model delivers roughly 50% higher CPU performance and can achieve up to 70% better overall scores in comprehensive tests. Graphics performance is even more impressive, with the Pro offering nearly double the gaming power in demanding GPU benchmarks.

Both smartphones start with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, but only the Pro model is available with storage options reaching up to 1TB.

For gamers, power users, and those looking for long-term future-proofing, the 17T Pro is clearly the stronger option.

Camera Comparison

Camera differences are far less dramatic than the performance gap.

The Xiaomi 17T inherits much of its camera hardware from its predecessor but receives a notable telephoto upgrade. It now features a 5x zoom camera, matching the setup found on the Pro model.

Both devices include:

  • 50MP telephoto cameras with 5x optical zoom
  • 13MP ultrawide cameras
  • 32MP front-facing selfie cameras

The main distinction lies in the primary sensors. The 17T uses Xiaomi’s Light Fusion 800 sensor, while the Pro employs the larger Light Fusion 950 sensor.

Photo Quality

In daylight conditions, both smartphones produce excellent photos with vibrant colors, strong contrast, and impressive detail. Differences between the two are difficult to spot in most situations.

The shared telephoto camera setup gives the standard 17T a significant advantage compared to previous generations. Zoom photos at 5x and even 10x remain highly detailed, occasionally appearing slightly sharper than those from the Pro model.

Ultrawide photography is similarly close, with both devices capturing sharp images and wide dynamic range.

At night, the 17T Pro benefits from slightly brighter exposure and more refined shadow handling. However, the advantage is smaller than expected, and the standard 17T remains highly competitive across all focal lengths.

Selfies and Video Recording

Selfie quality is largely similar, although the Pro tends to produce more natural skin tones and performs somewhat better in darker environments.

Video capabilities give the Pro model another advantage. While both devices support high-quality 4K recording, the 17T Pro adds 8K recording and 4K at 120fps from its main camera.

Interestingly, the standard 17T often produces slightly sharper footage at higher zoom levels, and its ultrawide camera can deliver better results in certain low-light video scenarios.

Final Verdict

The Xiaomi 17T series demonstrates how much the standard model has improved. The Xiaomi 17T delivers a premium design, excellent cameras, strong speakers, and a flagship-quality display while remaining noticeably more affordable.

The Xiaomi 17T Pro still earns its premium status thanks to longer battery life, faster charging, wireless charging support, superior gaming performance, and larger storage options.

For most users, the Xiaomi 17T offers exceptional value and may be the smarter purchase. However, those who prioritize maximum performance, longer endurance, and premium extras will find the additional €150 for the Xiaomi 17T Pro easier to justify.

In short, the Xiaomi 17T is the value champion, while the Xiaomi 17T Pro remains the choice for users who want the most powerful experience Xiaomi currently offers.
