Google has introduced a new Quick Share feature that allows Android users to send files directly to iPhones, iPads, and Mac devices using a QR code. The update offers a simpler alternative for users who do not yet have access to Quick Share’s direct AirDrop-style compatibility.
The feature was announced during The Android Show: I/O Edition and is currently rolling out to supported Android devices. According to reports, the wider rollout is expected to finish within the next few weeks.
Quick Share Now Supports QR Code Transfers
With the latest update, Android users can open Quick Share, select files, and generate a QR code for sharing. Apple device users can then scan the code using the Camera app on their iPhone or iPad.
After scanning, the files become available through a private download link that opens in the device’s default browser. Both devices must remain connected to the internet during the transfer process.
Google says the transfer process uses end-to-end encryption to keep shared content secure. The files are temporarily uploaded to Google servers, but they do not count against the sender’s Google Drive storage quota.
File Sharing Limits Revealed
Google has also confirmed several usage limits for the new feature. Android users can send up to 10GB of files to Apple devices within a 24-hour period.
In addition, users can share up to 1,000 files in a single session and send content to as many as 20 Apple devices at the same time.
The shared download links remain active for 24 hours before expiring automatically.
Google Expands Cross-Platform Sharing
The new QR code option arrives as Google continues expanding Quick Share compatibility across more Android smartphones. While direct AirDrop-style support is still limited on some devices, the QR code system provides a backup method that works across platforms without requiring additional apps.
The update is expected to improve file sharing between Android and Apple users, especially in situations where traditional AirDrop support is unavailable.
