The Dynamic Island on iPhones occupies significant screen space but offers limited functionality in return. Analyst Jeff Pu suggests Apple is working on a solution, and here’s what he shared.

Speaking to MacRumors, Pu revealed details about an upcoming change for the Dynamic Island. However, this update is reportedly exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, not its smaller siblings. The redesign aims to make the Dynamic Island noticeably smaller by leveraging new technologies.
Apple is experimenting with something called Metalens technology, which could minimize the space needed for the selfie camera and Face ID components in the notch. This innovation is expected to reduce the size of the Dynamic Island significantly.
Currently, iPhones use curved lenses for the selfie camera, which direct light onto the sensor. Metalens, on the other hand, offers a thinner and flatter design with etched details for precise light focusing. This change would make the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s selfie camera slimmer and less bulky.
While Pu didn’t explicitly state this, it appears Apple might be inspired by the Fresnel lens technology used in devices like the Meta Quest 2. Fresnel lenses reduce thickness and weight while maintaining quality, and Apple may adopt a similar approach for its selfie camera. However, it’s still unclear how this will affect Face ID.
